As a small business consultant, one of the most common things I hear owners say is that are overwhelmed. They can’t get to everything, they don’t have enough time, and of course the ideas! The never ending business ideas that you think of in the shower, in the car, and wonder which one is next… even though the last ones haven’t been finished.
Today I am going to talk about a quick reset you can do when you are feeling this way.
Usually I find entrepreneurs in one of 2 camps:
- You know what to do, you have a plan in place, but you still feel overwhelmed or scattered…or don’t remember what the plan was.
- You are 80% winging it and going through the motions and feeling overwhelmed or scattered. This category can include business owners of ten years or more.
People in business longer than you, still feel overwhelmed just like you do.
There are a multitude of reasons that you may be feeling this way in your business, and there is not a one size fits all reason. These are the trends that I notice when coaching business owners.
- Overwhelm can come from not enough help- if you hold the majority of the positions in your business and don’t hire help, of course you will be overloaded.
- If you are still doing too many things manually, it can also come from lack of systems or automation.
- It may also be that you don’t have aligned foundational elements in your business. For example, your ideal client doesn’t match your marketing strategy, so things feel harder than they need to. You are working harder for your clients and sales by not having a solid and aligned foundation.
What I see as the most basic problem for entrepreneurs, is the lack of built in accountability for staying on track, a documented plan, and a singular focus for you as the leader of your company.
- Let’s talk first about your plan- do you have one? How often do you look at it? Where do you keep it? If you don’t have a plan for what to focus on in the next 3 months, then that is step one. If you don’t know where to start, please get in touch.
- If you have a plan, keep it where you can easily access it. THIS IS THE EASIEST WAY OUT OF OVERWHELM.
Check in with your plan weekly. Are you still on track? When you feel overwhelmed, one of the easiest ways to find focus is to revisit your goal or plan.
Are the tasks you have on your calendar getting you closer to this goal?
Or are you buried in the urgent day to day and never picking your head up to secure the future success of your business?
- Keep your eye on the prize. Pick one project to focus on and see it through. Give it enough time to work. So many entrepreneurs abandon their projects or ideas too early. Either it never comes to fruition, or they try it once and say that it didn’t work.
- Give yourself a visual- write your focus task on a post-it so you don’t forget. Write down an affirmation that can keep you on track. Post a picture that refocuses you on the big picture.
- Lastly- take a break. When you are feeling overwhelmed that is your brain saying- “I need some air! There is too much going on in here. ”
recap:
- Make a plan
- Revisit your plan- ideally weekly when you plan out your schedule
- Pick one project and see it through
- Post something to remind you of your focus
- Take a break
I would be honored to help you with your plan.
